PTB is the National Metrology Institute of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. PTB measures with the highest accuracy and reliability – metrology as the core competence. PTB stands for progress and reliability in metrology for the benefit of society, trade and industry, and science. It maintains the national standards for the physical measurement quantities and continues their development towards ever better performance.

PTB is among the top names in metrology worldwide. As the National Metrology Institute of Germany, PTB is Germany's highest authority when it comes to correct and reliable measurements. Research and development work amounts to about two thirds of all of PTB's activities.

Department 3.3: Physical Chemistry
  • Dealing with the metrology-based realization of precision measurements

  • The metrology-based research and services aiming towards the determination of improved reference data for materials and applications for process optimization

  • Developing new and improved standards, measurement techniques, calibration methods and materials

  • Providing competent services in precision measurements and conformity assessments for measuring instruments

Department 3.5: Explosion Protection in Energy Technology
  • Dealing with the certification sector of explosion protection with the associated testing laboratory

  • Consulting for manufacturers and operators of explosion-protected equipment and protective systems, and participation in national regulatory bodies

  • Dealing with safety technologies to prevent damage caused by technical products, systems and facilities to persons, property and the environment

Department 9.3: International Cooperation
  • Developing cooperation contracted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union

  • Supporting developing and emerging countries in the development and use of a needs-based and internationally recognized quality infrastructure

  • Advising governments and ministries

  • Promoting quality infrastructure institutions and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises
