The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute (NMI) of Germany providing scientific and technical services. PTB measures with the highest accuracy and reliability – metrology as the core competence.

PTB has been working in the field of coordinate metrology for over 25 years and is the leading partner in a large number of international and national projects developing procedures and standards to improve the accuracy of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) beyond their current limits. PTB is a member of many national and international standardisation committees such as ISO TC 213 WG10. Several ISO standards in coordinate metrology (especially standards of the ISO 10360-series) were predominantly supported by PTB experts.

PTB has extensive experience in the operation of different types of coordinate measuring systems (CMSs) featuring various sensor types (tactile, tactile-optical, several optical). These CMSs have been used for calibration purposes as well as for research activities in the field of coordinate metrology. This work leads to error modelling for several types of CMSs.

In addition, PTB has leading expertise in the field of dimensional CT measurements and was, for example, the first NMI to operate its own industrial CT system. Current PTB research relates to improving accuracy, achieving traceability and reducing measurement time of CT systems. PTB also plays an active role in standardisation activities for dimensional CT.

PTB is responsible for coordinating the project.
