Support to Nepal in the field of quality infrastructure

The key institutions of the Nepalese quality infrastructure (QI) are strengthened, cooperate more closely and have improved their services according to international good practices.

The basic approach of the project consists of strengthening metrological and testing services, especially at the institutional meso-level. The envisaged measures include specialized technical and organizational consulting, seminars, workshops, political consultations, information and awareness-raising measures, and, to a limited extend, provision of laboratory equipment.

The following three elds of intervention will be addressed: The basic metrological infrastructure will be strengthened, and the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) will improve its technical capabilities, its service orientation and its international recognition. QI capacities in the priority areas of the Nepali-German cooperation (especially “Substainable Economic Development and Trade” and “Health”) will be established through a demand-oriented consultancy facility for quality infrastructure. Structures for public-private dialogue will be created and awareness for the signi cance of QI will be raised.

A well-functioning system of measurements, standards as well as conformity assessment is essential for Nepal, as it is an indispensable condition for taking part in trade and for the improvement of basic social services. Moving towards regional trade and improving the quality of products and services are main pillars of Nepal’s development strategy and the Nepal Trade Integration Strategy (NTIS). Through strengthening the national quality infrastructure, the project contributes to these objectives.

The project is carried out in close cooperation with other implementing agencies of German development cooperation, especially with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
