Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development (QuISP)

What is QuISP?

The blended learning training 'Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development' provides an introduction to Quality Infrastructure related disciplines (Metrology, Standardization, Testing, Certification and Accreditation) with the purpose of educating young professionals who are involved with trade related negotiations and issues. Through the combination of e-learning and face-to-face lecturing, blended learning offers continuous professional development with great time-flexibility.

Each training course is offered to no more than 20 participants. The course is intended only for young professionals from institutions related to trade negotiations/agreements such as Ministries of Trade, Trade Promotion Organizations and Chambers of Industry and Commerce.

The training course is free of charge - however participants are expected to dedicate sufficient time and effort to this training. Sponsorship for participation in the workshops can be offered to participants from PTB partner countries.

How is QuISP implemented?

The blended learning training consists of two face-to-face workshops and a tutor-guided six month e-learning phase.

The training begins with a four-day kickoff workshop on standards and related topics. This workshop aims to build teams, introducing the topic, identify the course-related prerequisites and expectations as well as prepare the participants for the e-learning section of the training. It also allows the participants to visit QI institutions of the host country answer some first questions and raise many more to be answered in the following e-learning phase.

During this e-learning phase, six online chapters will be offered, each accessible for about one month. Each chapter includes about six hours of interactive multimedia learning material:

Chapter 1: Fundamentals of Standardization
Chapter 2: Economic Impact of Standardization
Chapter 3: Technical Regulations & Standards
Chapter 4: Conformity Assessment
Chapter 5: Standards & the National QI
Chapter 6: Quality Infrastructure and Trade

Additionally, there will be online collaboration tasks, especially designed to transfer the chapter's content to practical know-how. During the entire e-learning phase, participants will be accompanied and supported online, by facilitators and experts.

After the e-learning section, the training concludes with a second face-to-face workshop to take place in Germany. This workshop will include presentations of training results, as well as expert lectures and excursions in the German cities of Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Berlin. After having passed the final assessment and preparing a presentation to be given during the concluding workshop, participants will obtain a certificate to confirm that they successfully completed the training. Subsequent to the Blended Learning Training, both knowledge and networks will be consolidated in an online follow-up.

What are the expected outputs?

The Blended Learning Training 'Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development' deepens the knowledge of and information about Quality Infrastructure related disciplines (Metrology, Standardization, Testing, Certification and Accreditation). Participants will have 1) an enhanced general understanding of the economic role and importance of these disciplines and 2) improve their skills and abilities in dealing with standards-related subjects in the context of international trade negotiations.

The training encourages the establishment of lasting professional relationships among course participants and resource persons. In the long-term this fosters the exchange of information and experience for continuous advancement of quality infrastructure in the participants' home countries.
