The Federal Institute of Metrology METAS is the Swiss National Metrology Institute. It was founded more than 150 years ago and has over 200 employees. Its tasks cover R&D activities on basic and applied metrology, work on legal metrology and much importance is attributed to the provision of commercial calibration and measurement services for industry and research (www.metas.ch).

The Laboratory for Length, Nano- and Microtechnology has extensive knowledge in the field of dimensional metrology. It has built a highly accurate micro-coordinate measuring machine (micro-CMM), which contributes to international comparisons, research projects, and calibration services. Furthermore, it recently developed a metrology X-ray computed tomography (CT) system. The particularly stable and comprehensively characterized setup enables measuring small workpieces containing micrometer sized features.

METAS leads work package 1 addressing the development of CT geometry measurement procedures, manufacturing and calibration of reference objects, and transfer of the gained knowledge into industry and to measurement service providers.
