Some Ideas and Progress in Radiometry at NIST

Kolloquium der Abteilung 7

The Sources and Detectors Group at NIST undertake a wide range of activities related to radiometry. In the past few years, we have documented calibrations spanning more than twenty orders of magnitude; from a few photons/sec to a "mol" of photons/sec. I will present some 'big ideas' in light of the 2019 redefinition of the SI, some tedious problems in radiometry, and some history of our Group since the 1970s. I will explain our endeavours to make optical power traceable to the SI (Planck's constant) by way of photon momentum with uncertainty rivaling traditional methods. Unique capability at PTB and support from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation ofGermany have brought me to Berlin in the past to help advance carbon-nanotube based radiometers for infrared and remote sensing. I will briefly summarize our portfolio of detectors bound for space in collaboration with the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) and support from NASA.
