Simone Hufnagel was awarded the prize for the best oral presentation at this year's meeting of the German chapter of the "International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM)". In her talk Simone Hufnagel presented a method for the determination of 3D quantitative parameter maps of the heart. This method provides important diagnostic information about the myocardium not only...

Rudolf-Jaeckel-Preis 2023 for Dr. Karl Jousten

Whether for the realization of the low-temperature scale or for processes in the semiconductor industry: Many applications in physics and technology use vacuum technology, and especially the possibility to measure even the smallest pressures precisely and traceably. For his fundamental work in the field of vacuum pressure measurement, Dr. Karl...

Artificial intelligence and machine learning tools hold promise to assist or drive high-stakes decisions in areas such as finance, medicine, or autonomous driving. The upcoming AI Act will require that the principles by which such algorithms arrive at their predictions should be transparent. However, the field of XAI is lacking formal problem specifications and theoretical results. In a new study,...

Active implantable medical devices (AIMDs), such as cardiac pacemakers, have already been implanted in millions of patients worldwide. However, individuals with AIMDs still face limitations in accessing state-of-the-art MRI technology due to the potential risks involved. This restriction is due to the fact that MR scanners employ powerful radiofrequency fields which can result in tissue burns...

In ersten...

Brachytherapy is a specific tumor therapy using ionizing radiation where a radioactive source is positioned in the vicinity of, or in close contact with human tissue. It is often applied in the treatment of cervical, prostate, esophageal, lung and breast cancer. By irradiating the cancer cells directly, transmission through healthy tissue is not required, as in the case of external radiation beam...

When a real measurement procedure is reproduced by simulations, it may be referred to as a “virtual measurement”. From a metrological point of view, the question is how to ensure confidence in such virtual measurements. While methods to estimate diverse sources of error in simulations have been developed over the past decades, there has to date been no accepted strategy for meeting the...

Hydrogen plays an important role for the decarbonization of the energy sector. In its gaseous form, it is stored at pressures of up to 1000 bar at which real gas effects become relevant. To capture these effects in numerical simulations, accurate real gas models are required. We propose new correlation equations for relevant hydrogen properties …

If an electrical device, or even a simple cable or electrode, is used in an MRI or in its immediate vicinity, this device may interact with the strong electromagnetic fields of the MRI. The consequences can be MR images distorted to the point of uselessness, destroyed equipment and, in the worst case, even injuries to the patient in the scanner. Especially small manufacturers with innovative...
