Awarded Terahertz Reflectance Measurements on Coated Textiles

24.01.2023

Image: Photo of the terahertz reflectance measurement head developed by PTB for determining the layer thickness of coated textiles. Without cover, four parabolic mirrors can be seen inside. Mirrors 1+2 are used to focus the terahertz radiation onto a white plastic target (O) attached for alignment, and mirrors 3+4 are used to detect reflection from the target.

At the international textile conference ADDITC 2022 held in Aachen in early December, the contribution "Thickness Gauging of Polymer Coatings on Knit Fabrics Using Fast Terahertz TDS" on the thickness measurements of polymer coatings on knitted fabrics by means of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) was given the "Best Poster Award 2022".

Katja Dutzi from TOPTICA Photonics AG as first author and the presenter of the poster Andreas Steiger, head of the Working Group 7.34 Terahertz-Radiometry at PTB, were awarded. The outstanding results of the TeraMeTex cooperation project between the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research DITF, the TOPTICA Photonics AG and PTB, which was completed in 2021, were presented. The aim of the project funding by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) within the framework of the ZIM funding program was the further development of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, that the layer thickness of coated textiles and during coating defects such as bubbles and delamination could be determined for the first time non-destructively and already during production by terahertz reflectance measurements.
