BMBF funds first quantum communication link in Lower Saxony with 2 million euros

04.11.2021

In the research consortium "Quantum Repeater.Link" (Opens external link in new windowQR.X), which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), more than 20 partners are jointly developing novel quantum repeaters and researching their use in real-world scenarios. The goal is to develop innovative approaches based on three technological platforms: Atoms and Ions in Traps, Color Centers in Diamonds, and Semiconductor Nanostructures. This will lead to the development of modularized, system-integrated and portable components for quantum amplifiers. As part of this consortium, researchers from Leibniz Universität Hannover and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt have received a grant of 2.1 million euros to build the "Niedersachsen Quantum Link" - the first quantum communications fiber optic link in Lower Saxony. In this project, field tests of quantum photonic semiconductor devices will be carried out as well as the synchronized transmission of single photons over a 70 km long fiber optic link between the two cities will be demonstrated.

General information about the QR.X joint project can be found in the following press release: https://www.uni-saarland.de/universitaet/aktuell/news/artikel/nr/24344.html
