Counting optical photons for the metrology of nanophotonic light sources

The emission statistics of quantum-optical light sources are extremely important for understanding these devices, but at the same time difficult to measure with conventional detectors. A measuring system that was developed and characterized by PTB and the Technische Universität Berlin within the scope of the recently completed MICQ2 EMPIR project now allows the exact photon statistics to be determined using sources with just a few photons from the optical to the infrared wavelength range.
