Since its invention 50 years ago, the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been characterized by the pursuit of higher magnetic field strengths. MR scanners with magnets up to 7 T are now a familiar sight in research facilities worldwide, but initiatives to build even more powerful systems have already emerged in many countries. In (and around) Germany, all "ultrahigh field" sites with MRT scanners of 7 T or above, have already joined forces many years ago in the "German Ultrahigh Field Initiative" (GUFI), with PTB as one of its founding members. Out of this network, the ambitious proposal for a 14 T whole-body MRI scanner as a national German facility emerged. A detailed concept for such a project, from the research objectives to the technical requirements, jointly written by scientists from all German GUFI sites, has now been published in Magnetic Resonance Materials in Physics, Biology and Medicine (Ladd, M.E., Quick, H.H., Speck, O. et al., Germany's journey towards 14 Tesla human magnetic resonance, doi: 10.1007/s10334-023-01085-z).
