Quantitative Change of battery electrodes investigated by complementary X-ray spectrometric methods

Image: Comparison of X-ray absorption measurements of the three NMC cathodes at the Ni-K and Co-K edges. The three compounds differ in the ratios of nickel, manganese, and cobalt: (1:1:1), (6:2:2), and (8:1:1).

At the 'Process-near X-ray Analysis (PRORA) 2022' symposium, Karina Bzheumikhova, PhD student in the working group 7.24 X-ray spectrometry, was awarded the poster prize for the presentation of her work 'X-ray spectroscopy investigation of LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 cathode materials: the final step to understanding pristine NMC cathode materials'.

Karina Bzheumikhova presented results of her doctoral thesis on investigations on NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery cathodes using complementary x-ray spectrometry methods. The work was carried out as part of the EURAMET EPM (European Partnership on Metrology) project 'OpMetBat'. By comparing three cathodes with different proportions of nickel, it was shown that an increase of the proportion of nickel causes a change in the oxidation states of the nickel atoms as well as of the cobalt atoms. Using numerical calculations, a quantitative change in the oxidation state of (3.8 ± 0.4) % of the cobalt atoms could be determined. There is currently no universally accepted method for determining the causes of cathode degradation at the atomic level. However, it is understood that the degradation mechanisms are complex and nonlinear, and even small changes in oxidation states can greatly impact the properties of metal oxides.
