Research work at PTB is concerned with the analysis, modelling and performance optimisation of energy states in mobile embedded systems. The approach is also transferable to other IT systems, such as data centres.
Mobile devices have become an integral part of communication, business and social interactions. The energy consumption of such systems is constantly increasing due to the ever-expanding range of functions. It is therefore important to optimise the use of their battery capacity.
The method first determines the main functions and their energy states. A classification of the energy states into so-called "elementary energy states" and their differentiation into optimal, sub-optimal and critical energy states is then proposed. The energy states of an application can then be modelled, analysed and optimised using Signal Interpret Petri Nets (SIPN). Specific properties of such networks, such as reachability and liveliness of the energy states occurring there, are used with regard to performance optimisation.
The work presents a useful approach for analyzing and optimizing energy consumption of mobile embedded devices, contributing to a sustainable and energy-efficient use of these systems.
