In a new, five‑year research project (Coordinated Research Project), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is investigating possibilities to improve dosimetry in diagnostic and interventional radiology. The Physikalisch‑Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is supporting the IAEA in this endeavor. The project is to provide the required data for revising the IAEA Technical Reports Series (TRS) No. 457 titled “Dosimetry in Diagnostic Radiology: An International Code of Practice”.

The Technical Reports Series No. 457 titled “Dosimetry in Diagnostic Radiology: An International Code of Practice” (TRS No. 457) is an internationally recognized document published by the IAEA and intended to ensure the calibration quality of dosimeters for diagnostic radiology. It contains a description of the physical basis of dosimetry in diagnostic radiology as well as detailed instructions for measurement setups, uncertainty analyses and measuring devices for calibration laboratories. Moreover, it describes measurement setups and recommendations for the measurement of important dosimetric quantities in routine clinical practice.

The current 2007 version, however, does not include the numerous technical developments of the last few years. This especially applies to new developments in mammography, computed tomography and interventional diagnostics, where the exposure rate of patients has been continuously reduced thanks to the use of new filter materials. Within the scope of a Coordinated Research Project initiated by the IAEA, the scientific basis for revising TRS No. 457 with regard to these technical developments is (now) to be developed.

In this project, PTB manages the work package for characterizing diagnostics dosimeters, taking into account the new, previously described radiation conditions, which are used for constancy tests and acceptance tests in diagnostic radiology.
