Photoemission: from the basics to application to transparent conductive oxides

Kolloquium der Abteilung 7

Photoemission spectroscopy is a powerful techniques giving access to many material properties. In this talk, I will explain the basic principles of photoemission and the applications to a few systems that have attracted wide attention in the last few years, namely transparent conducting oxides (TCOs). These materials have both transparency up to the UV-C region thanks to the large band-gap, electrical conductivity and high breakdown voltage. The further possibility to tune all properties by post-growth treatment renders TCOs suitable candidate materials for application in high-power electronics materials, gas sensors and UV-blind detectors. I will illustrate how photoemission spectroscopy can contribute to elucidate the fundamental properties of TCOs and give an outlook for the future investigations.
