"Next Generation Sequencing" (NGS) stands for a technology of nucleic acid analysis which, for example, detects pathogens by simultaneously sequencing several hundred million fragments of nucleic acid sequences. These high-throughput or parallel sequencing technologies have opened completely new dimensions in nucleic acid analysis.

For PTB, which has already developed reference measurement procedures for some pathogens, such as the human cytomegalovirus (hCMV), this opens a very important new field of work to explore.
