In the recent years, several initiatives have been started to investigate the potential use of distributed ledger, also known as blockchain, technologies in metrology.
Proposed applications range from making traceability in calibration hierarchies more transparent and efficient to distributed infrastructures for processes in the quality infrastructure.

The further development of digital calibration certificates (DCC) and their implementation has gained a lot of traction and great interest in 2022. The third international DCC conference will bring together experts, new users and interested parties.
The DCC Conference is organised as virtual event over three days.
Dates: 28th Feb - 2nd Mar 2023
Conference website: https://www.ptb.de/dcc/dcc_conf_2023
19. - 21. September 2022 the IMEKO TC6 "Digitalization" organised the first international conference on metrology and digital transformation - the M4Dconf 2022. The Conference was organized as hybrid event with physical attendance in Berlin.
Conference website: https://www.m4dconf2022.ptb.de/
Date: 20.-21. October 2020
Participants from all over the world are invited to exchange ideas and experiences with us and learn a lot about the DCC.
Registration: until 31. Mai 2020 here.
Participation is free of charge.
The Digital Calibration Certificate (DCC) is used for electronic processing and dissemination as well as uniform interpretation of calibration results. It is protected against manipulation by the use of proven cryptographic methods. The target group of the DCC are all facilities worldwide that require proof of the metrological traceability of their measurement results. This includes in particular industry, but also metrology institutes and designated institutes, national calibration centres and calibration laboratories.
The aim of the DCC workshop was to present the status of developments. First Good Practice examples and applications were shown.

This workshop once again brought together legal metrology experts from across Europe to discuss developments and challenges that arise from digitalization.
The focus this year was on the presentations of the current status in the project "European Metrology Cloud". Progress and future outlook from the different work packages were presented in terms of talks and posters.
The highlight was the live demonstrator of the initial prototype of the Metrology Cloud node. The participants also had the opportunity to take home a copy of the node network to test the current status in a virtual environment.
The aim of the GEMIMEG project is to develop a research agenda for the development and establishment of sensor networks as digitally calibrated measuring systems with the focus on "safety and security" and the unambiguous identity of the sensors. The project is to be seen as a needs analysis of a potentially following lighthouse project - a model project with lighthouse character to be conceived in the course of the project is to strategically strengthen local key industries.
Overall, the workshops made clear which selected research needs should be addressed in order to tackle the joint task of digital transformation in a meaningful and efficient way.

The two EMPIR-Projects - SmartCom and Met4FoF - had their joined kick-off meeting on 18. and 19. June in Brunswick. With about 80 participants from all over Europe and partner institutions from Asia the meeting was a great success and marks the beginning of a prosperous collaboration. In the margins of the meeting the first two contracts were signed with industriell partners for a cooperation of a joined Stakeholder Advisory Board. This Advisory Board will be expanded within the next few months and assist the projects by providing advice.
The target group of this workshop was primarily management boards and development departments of industry. In a joint dialog with the PTB they had the possibility of analyzing their fundamental needs, in order to draw up and implement future-oriented concepts.
Besides technical solutions and the digitalization strategy of the PTB, other aspects like a secure data communication, digital signatures as well as the demands of the legal metrology were discussed. Right from the beginning the planned implementations are supposed be realized in a close cooperation with industrial companies and to be implemented rapidly into the worldwide market.

Due to the rapid and wide-ranging digitalization occurring today, numerical simulations and virtual images have an increasing importance in research, development and implementation. Especially, if the gained information is an inseparable part of measuring and manufacturing, the question of accuracy and quality must be answered reliably. Whereas the science of measurement for real measuring is well established, in the field of virtual measuring, many open questions still needs to be answered.
For this reason, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt hosted the workshop “Metrology for virtual measurement devices” in the seminar series “Metrology of the digitalization of economy and society”. This workshop brought together a broad range of stakeholders, scientists and users in the field of mathematic-physical simulations and simulation software, in order to discuss urgent research, development and standardized questions in a transdisciplinary symposium.
