The libraries at the sites in Berlin and Braunschweig are internal service providers which supply PTB staff with special information from electronic and printed sources. The contents of the library stock and licensed online sources are oriented towards PTB's tasks with the focal points of physics, engineering sciences, metrology and analytical chemistry. Stock enquiries can be made electronically using the  online library catalogue.

By taking part in the Common Library Network (Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund, GBV), a journal database (Zeitschriftendatenbank, ZDB), an electronic journal library (Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek, EZB), a database information system (Datenbank-Infosystem, DBIS) and the German interlibrary loan system (Deutscher Leihverkehr), the libraries are integrated in the German information infrastructure.

External visitors can use the libraries during opening hours without making an appointment. An advance notification by phone is recommended.

PTB's own bibliographic databases (e.g. PTB-Publica, PTB-Historie, PTB-Archiv) and the Open Access Repository are compiled and managed by the libraries.

PTB's archive is located on the Braunschweig campus. The central task of the archive is the documentation of the records and sources on the history of the PTB, the PTR, the metrology institutes of the former GDR and the history of metrology in Germany. After registering with the library, the contents of the archive can be used for academic purposes.

The PTB library is responsible for the coordination of research data management. It offers competence and personal advice around all relevant subjects and tasks: redaction of data management plans, documentation of scientific work, data conservation and publication, choice of file and metadata formats. Beyond that the library cooperates to the construction of a PTB-internal infrastructure connecting several services for several tasks on research data: the repository PTB-OAR, the platform for data management plans RDMO, the electronic lab notebook eLabFTW and the data organisation system CaosDB.

This repository grants free access to a number of documents and factual datasets that were elaborated at PTB. This includes publications such as the "PTB-Mitteilungen", the metrological expert journal of PTB, and numerous of documents from the field of legal metrology, as well as research datasets. All publications are persistently identified via a DOI and can thus easily referenced.

The library is responsible for the documentation of publications and lectures of PTB-staff. For details, please link to the database PTB-Publica.
