Section 9.11

Tasks

The tasks of the section Industrial Metrology include the support of German economy, especially in the fields of calibrations, the support of accredited calibration laboratories within the framework of the German Calibration Service (DKD), technology transfer, the promotion of joint pre-competitive research and development of PTB and external partners through the Opens internal link in current windowTransMeT funding programme as well as the implementation of Opens internal link in current windowTwinning projects.

 

The main tasks are:

Creation of DKD documents and their translation

Operation of the DKD Office

Organisation and hosting of DKD meetings and other events

 

Subject area Opens internal link in current windowTechnology Transfer:

Assessment and evaluation of inventions

Support/supervision of patenting processes and licensing agreements

Support of the PTB departments to raise third-party funds for industrial projects

Counselling for business start-ups

Marketing for PTB technologies

Preparation of technology offers for commercial purpose

Co-operation with external technology transfer offices

 

Further tasks:

Assessment for the German Accreditation Body (Opens external link in current windowDAkkS)

Consulting in the fields of metrology, verification, calibration and accreditation

Active participation in the accreditation committees of Opens external link in current windowDAkkS

Participation in international projects

National and international committee work and standardization activities

 

Technology transfer constitutes part of the services which PTB renders to economy and society, in accordance with its political mandate to strengthen the links between science and economy. A goal agreed upon with the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) is to enhance the transfer of technology into the German economy. The term technology transfer encompasses all activities leading to an economic exploitation of the results gained by these activities.

The "TransMeT" programme serves to promote joint pre-competitive research and development activities between PTB and external partners. This will allow the further development of PTB’s existing metrological know-how and expertise with regard to a wider utilisation and exploitation. At the same time, this should contribute to strengthen the research basis and competitiveness, especially of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Twinning was developed by the Commission as an EU instrument for institution building and is based on a partnership between Public Administrations of EU Member States and of beneficiary countries. This institutional cooperation yields concrete mandatory results which are jointly agreed with the Commission.
