Clinical study on fluorescence-based detection of rheumatic diseases successfully completed

23.08.2010

A clinical study on fluorescence imaging towards early detection of rheumatoid arthritis was carried out in cooperation with mivenion GmbH and the Helios Clinics and has been completed succesfully. Within this study, 30 healthy persons and 60 patients – of which 30 were suffering from osteoarthritis and 30 suffering from rheumatoid arthritis – were examined, and an exhaustive database of the results was set up. Based on this data, the measurements are analysed, analytical algorithms are elaborated and the procedure is further developed. Mivenion acquired the licensing rights from PTB to manufacture more fluorescence imaging systems for rheumatic diseases based on the technology developed by PTB, and first devices have already been delivered to hospitals and resident doctors. Furthermore, the statutory health insurance companies gave already a note of interest in the imaging procedure because they reckon the potential to reduce the costs for treatment of rheumatoid diseases by applying it.

The project was financially supported by the Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) and co-funded by the EU (European Regional Development Fund, EFRE).
