Evaluation of a recent guide to the determination of the measurement uncertainty

23.08.2010

The "Guide to the Expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM)“ regulates the determination of measurement uncertainties in metrology. In 2008, a supplement to this guide was released (GUM-S1) which describes a numerical Monte Carlo procedure for the calculation of measurement uncertainties. The Guide does not state to which extent this corresponds to a Bayesian method; this has led to controversial discussions. Since the use of Bayesian statistics for the determination of measurement uncertainties in metrology is widely recognised, this issue was investigated and clarified. It was possible to demonstrate that GUM-S1, within the scope of its specified applications, is indeed equivalent to a Bayesian procedure when using the generally accepted "standard priors".
