CoSimPy: an Open-Source Python Library for MRI Radiofrequency Coil EM/Circuit Cosimulation

07.02.2022

The Electromagnetic (EM)/Circuit cosimulation method represents an effective strategy to address problems where a radiative structure has to interact with external supporting circuitries. For this reason, this method is generally exploited in the design of radiofrequency (RF) coils for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Especially when multi-element transmit coils are involved, the EM/Circuit cosimulation method allows to dramatically simplify the designing process.

In a collaboration between I.N.Ri.M., Torino, Italy, and PTB's MR technology group (8.11), carried out in the framework of the MIMAS 17IND01 EMPIR project, CoSimPy was developed: the first open-source Python-based library specifically for MRI Radiofrequency Coil EM/Circuit cosimulations. CoSimPy has been designed to complement those commercial and open source EM simulation bundles which lack an integrated cosimulation tool. Furthermore, it is optimised to simplify the standard RF coil design workflow and to be easily integrated with contributions from the MRI community. In the paper, along with the presentation of the library framework and main functionalities, its performance is tested against results from a commercial and validated simulation tool (Sim4Life) and ideas for future improvements are proposed.
