Detector Radiometry and Radiation Thermometry

Department 7.3

Tasks

The central tasks of the department are non-contact temperature measurements (radiation thermometry) from -170 °C to 3000 °C and the quantitative measurement of electromagnetic radiation from the UV, to the visible and to the far infrared spectral range (THz radiation). These fields are very important for monitoring and controlling industrial production processes (e.g. in food, plastic, glass and metal processing), for energy production, but also for weather observation, climate research and astronomy.

  • Realisation, dissemination and further development of the temperature scale from -170 °C to 3000 °C by means of methods based on radiation thermometry and radiometry
  • Calibration of radiation temperature standards and radiation temperature devices (e.g. radiation thermometers, thermographic cameras, cavity radiators, infrared plate radiators)
  • Temperature determination of high-temperature fixed points
  • Emissivity measurements
  • Development and temperature determination of high-temperature fixed points
  • Calibration of spectral radiance in the wavelength range from 220 nm to 200 µm (for the VUV spectral range, cf. Department 7.1)
  • Radiation thermometry and infrared radiometry in vacuum for the traceability of  remote sensing data of the Earth and of metrologic and climate observations
  • Measurement of the spectral responsivity of radiation detectors from 200 nm to 2.4 µm
  • Measurement of the spectral responsivity of radiation detectors from 1 THz to 5 THz
  • Radiometric characterization and modelling of radiation detectors
  • Development of novel radiation detectors as radiometric reference detectors
  • National and international comparison measurements
