UV and VUV Radiometry

Working Group 7.13


The working group is active in the field of metrology with synchrotron radiation in the wavelength range between 400 nm (UV) down to 40 nm (VUV). For this purpose, two beamlines are operated at the Metrology Light Source (MLS) in Berlin-Adlershof: at a bending magnet, a measurement station equipped with an 1-m-normal-incidence monochromator (NIM) is used for detector-based radiometry and for characterization of materials and components regarding their spectral characteristics. At the U125 undulator of the MLS a beamline for tunable undulator radiation in the spectral range between infrared and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) is used.

For the use with monochromatized synchrotron radiation in the UV and VUV spectral range, a specifically customized electrical substitution cryogenic radiometer is operated as primary detector standard.

In the framework of scientific co-operations with partners from research institutes as well as from industry the measurement capabilities were constantly adapted to specific, individual needs,  in particular for the characterization of space telescopes, and the investigation of surfaces by analytical methods like e.g. ellipsometry and photoelectron spectroscopy.

The following calibrations according to the Initiates file downloadquality management handbook of PTB division 7 are performed in the working group 7.13:

  • Determination of the spectral responsivity of photodetectors in the wavelength range 40 nm to 400 nm (7.1-1.2)
  • Determination of the spectral reflectance/transmission of optical materials and components in the wavelength range 40 nm to 400 nm (7.1-1.3)
