The development of a new primary standard for X-ray emitting electronic brachytherapy devices was started

30.09.2019

As part of the PTB coordinated EMPIR project PRISM-eBT, Primary standards and traceable measurement methods for X-ray electronic brachytherapy devices, a primary standard based on an extrapolation chamber is being developed. Initial simulations were carried out to determine the optimal materials, then the primary standard is being constructed and subsequently built.

A primary standard for the absorbed dose to water is being developed. In addition, new radiation qualities from miniature X-ray tubes will be introduced that can be adopted by national metrology institutes (NMIs) in other countries at no high cost to build a calibration service in each country. In this way, the absorbed dose to water at a depth of 1 cm, which is relevant for tumor irradiation in brachytherapy, can be dissiminated in Europe and worldwide, which, in particular, improves tumor therapy but also the comparability of clinical studies.
