Homogeneity of thoron fields


In a cooperation with the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (Federal Office for Radiation Protection), mathematical simulations (method: Finite Elements based on the measurement of the turbulent transport processes) of a thoron distribution were compared with measurements of the associated thoron activity concentration in the thoron progenies chamber.

The input quantities of the calculation are the source terms, the ambient parameters and the flow velocities in all three axes of space. With the present model, the minima and the maxima of the distribution can be successfully predicted. For an application for metrological purposes, the flow conditions must, however, be known more exactly. This is presently not possible as there is no high-resolution probe measuring technology for flow velocities in three dimensions available.
