In cyclotrons, in contrast to linear accelerators, the ions are accelerated on a circular path.
The key technical feature of the cyclotron installed at PTB (Figure 1) is the ability to rotate the whole accelerator (Figure 2) within an angular range of about 200 degrees. This is of great advantage when compared to static facilities, especially when it comes to experiments in pulsed beam mode for determining cross sections.
