New measuring quantities in radiation protection

In its report ICRU 95 the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) has proposed new quantities in radiation protection. The effects of a possible introduction of these quantities are currently being discussed internationally. Independently of this, some information on the subject is given here.

Conversion coefficients from the basic quantities (air kerma, absorbed dose and fluence) of the different types of radiation to the proposed quantities:

  • Conversion coefficients for monoenergetic radiation for photons, electrons and neutrons: ICRU report 95

  • Conversion coefficients for standardized radiation qualities for photons:

1.       R. Behrens and T. Otto:
Conversion coefficients from total air kerma to the newly proposed ICRU/ICRP operational quantities for radiation protection for photon reference radiation qualities
R. Behrens et al 2022 J. Radiol. Prot. 42, 011519

  • Conversion coefficients for standardized radiation qualities for electrons:

1.       R. Behrens:
Conversion coefficients from absorbed dose to tissue to the newly proposed ICRU/ICRP operational quantities for radiation protection for beta reference radiation qualities
R. Behrens 2021 J. Radiol. Prot. 41, 871

  • Conversion coefficients for standardized radiation qualities for neutrons are not yet available.

  • The Change of the quantities for photon and/or beta radiation are summarized in a lecture: a Initiates file downloadPDF file and a Initiates file downloadvideo are available. The talk was originally presented at the Opens external link in new windowIM2022 conference.
