Metrology for Brachytherapy:
State-of-the-art and beyond
International Workshop
30-31 May 2017
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt
Department: Radiation Protection Dosimetry, Braunschweig
Background and objectives
This workshop aims to define future challenges and directions within the scope of metrology for brachytherapy.
The workshop will provide a forum for the exchange of information, ideas and expertise in the field of brachytherapy in the community with experts from metrology, medical physics, radiation oncology, radiobiology as well as vendors.
The current status of brachytherapy in clinics and hospitals, quality assurance, calibration services and the current and future potentials of technological improvements and medical physics innovations will be reviewed in the light of future demands on metrology and calibration services.
Main topic
- current reference dosimetry in brachytherapy
- clinical dosimetry and dose verification
- dosimetry parameters: MC calculation and experimental verification
- model based dose calculation algorithms (MBDCA)
- experimental verification of the 3D dose distribution
- detectors in brachytherapy
- in-vivo dosimetry
- electronic brachytherapy and intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT)
- new sources
- directional LDR brachytherapy sources
- eye plaque brachytherapy
- image guided brachytherapy (IGBT)
- radiobiological effects: detectors, micro- and nanodosimetry
Venue
The conference will be held at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB).
The PTB is the national metrology institute of Germany providing scientific and technical services. PTB measures with the highest accuracy and reliability - metrology as the core competence.

- The workshop-dinner will take place at the hotel "Deutsches Haus" close to the castle of Brunswick (
http://www.deutscheshaus24.de/).
- Poster display dimensions: (1.18 m x 1.48 m (w x h) maximum usable surface)
DIN A0-format (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm) is recommended. - Interested participants of this workshop are invited to attend the meeting of DIN 6803-3 Working Group which will take place after the PTB workshop on Wednesday 31.05.17 from 15:30h to 18:00h. The Working Group is committed to the analysis of factors influencing experimental dosimetry, evaluation of the connected uncertainties and the development of a standardized form of dose determination at short distances from photon sources. The results are to be published in the projected standard DIN 6803-3. After the PTB workshop the group will discuss the results of the meeting in respect to the DIN project and plan future steps. Interested workshop participants are invited to join in the discussion.
