This measuring site was established to characterize in particular the response of dosemeters for ionizing radiation with regard to the ambient dose equivalent rate of cosmic radiation at ground level.
The measuring site for cosmic radiation is located on a lake approx. 15 km away from PTB. On the lake, a platform has been installed which mainly consists of low-radiation plastics. At a water depth of 2 - 3 m and a distance from the lakefront of more than 100 m, the terrestrial component of the environmental radiation is almost completely shielded. This is why dosemeters on the platform are exposed only to cosmic radiation.
