Calibration, testing, or irradiation of dosemeters or secondary standards for beta and photon radiation

The following services are covered by the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) Mutual Recognition Arrangement (see eleven CMC entries). 

All irradiations are carried out in compliance with the relevant ISO standards, ISO 29661 and ISO 6980 for beta radiation, ISO 4037 and ISO/TS 18090-1 for photon radiation and ISO 20956 for photon radiation at Low Dose Rates.

Radiation qualities

Beta radiation:

  • Beta radiation fields in accordance with ISO 6980‑1 from the following isotopes:
    Pm‑147, Kr‑85, Sr‑90/Y‑90, Ru‑106/Rh‑106

Photon radiation:

  • X-radiation: ISO 4037‑1 N-, W- and H‑series from 8 keV to 250 keV
  • Gamma radiation: ISO 4037‑1 S‑Co (Co‑60) and S‑Cs (Cs‑137)
  • High energy photon radiation: ISO 4037‑1 R‑C (4.4 MeV) and R-F (6 MeV to 7 MeV)

Photon radiation of Low Dose Rates:

  • Gamma radiation: Cs‑137, Co‑60, Co‑57, Am‑241, Ra‑226
  • Zero effect of dosimetry systems
  • Secondary cosmic radiation

Dose ranges and dose rate ranges

Beta radiation:

  • Dose range: 1 μSv to 1 Sv
  • Dose rate range: 30 μSv/h to 0.2 Sv/h

Photon radiation:

(depending on irradiation facility):

  • Dose range: 0.1 μSv to 100 Sv
  • Dose rate range: 0.1 μSv/h to 10 Sv/h

Photon radiation of Low Dose Rates:

  • Dose range: 0.1 μSv to 2 μSv
  • Dose rate range: 0.01 μSv/h to 0.4 μSv/h
