R&D project

Traceable and robust calibration procedures for internal microstructures

Period of the project

Start:  April 2011
End:   September 2013

Description of the project

It is the objective of the project to develop, for the first time, a complete chain of procedures for the calibration of complex internal microstructures. Central points are the development and manufacture of robust multiple-ball probes, the elaboration and validation of associated measurement procedures and modeling of the probing characteristic of the probes. Testing is intended to be carried out at PTB on 3D coordinate measuring machines. The measurement and calibration of internal micro threads (M2 down to M0.7) are provided as pilot applications. Internal micro threads can, thus, not only be gauged with plug check gauges, but measured by tactile probing. The development of a laminar evaluation procedure will make an additional measurand – the determination of the spiral area course available to industry, in addition to the already existing ones. For this purpose, fundamental documents will be elaborated for standardization committees and calibration service providers and a measurement uncertainty analysis will be carried out.
