R&D project

High Precision 3D Fiber Probe

Project period

Start: July 2019
End:  June 2022

Project description

The main goal of the project is the development of a novel 3D fiber probe sensor for tactile-optical coordinate measuring machines.

The probing error of the 3D fiber probe is mainly limited by the measurement of the axial deflection. According to the current state of the art, the axial deflection is measured with a laser distance sensor using the Foucault principle. Furthermore, the probing sphere tends to stick on the measuring objects, caused by the very low stiffness of the probing system. This leads to unwanted stick-slip effects while measuring in scanning mode.

The aim of this project is to develop a novel tactile-optical probe which exhibits a improved probing error < 150 nm and a reduced appearance of stick-slip effects. To reduce the probing error, the use of an interferometric sensor to measure the axial deflection will be studied. To minimize the appearance of stick-slip effects, a new probe design with optimized elastic behavior will be realized.
