R&D project

Development of a novel method for quality evaluation of micro milling tools based on virtually determined single-point uncertainties - Q MikroWz

Project period

Star: April 2015
End:    July 2017

Project description

The aim of the project is to develop a novel method for quality evaluation of complex shaped micro milling tools. So far, these tools can only be assessed by the deviation from measured single point coordinates to the nominal geometry. A reliable quality statement is therefore impossible, as the uncertainty of the individual points can‘t be considered. Therefore methods are being developed to achieve an overall quality statement from the local quality of single-points in the project. To this end, new procedures, parameters, calculation and display procedures are developed and implemented by the partner esco and afterwards exemplary implemented for the evaluation of shape cutters and hobs for micro gearings. This should be transferable to the evaluation of any precision cutting tools –e. g. general (micro) form and milling tools.

Basis for this unique assessment of micro milling tools is the uncertainty of the individual measuring points. This should be calculated by an advancement of the virtual coordinate measuring machine of PTB. This advancement for microprobes shall be realized by the PTB and exemplarily be implemented and tested for the optical-tactile microprobe of the project partner Werth Messtechnik.
