Publication of the new NTS standard for secure time transmission over the Internet

09.10.2020

The NTP protocol is used by billions of computers and smart devices to synchronize their built-in digital clocks. Until recently, the identity of the time source used or the authenticity of the time data exchanged could not be guaranteed. On the other hand, a growing number of applications require a reliable time source with authentication included.
In October 2020, the new standard Network Time Security (short NTS) was published with significant collaboration of PTB scientists from the departments 4.4. and Q.4. It enables the securing of time transfer with NTP via the Internet without any significant loss of accuracy.
