Safety characteristics in Explosion Protection

Working group 3.71

Profile

Chemsafe is the Data Base for Safety Characteristics in Explosion Protection. It is a joint project of

  • Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB),
  • Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)
  • and Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V. (DECHEMA).

The experts of PTB and BAM collect the data, assess them for reliability and insert them into the data base.

Research/Development

The knowledge of safety related data for fire and explosion protection is an indispensable prerequisite during the evaluation of risks related to processing, storage, transportation and disposal of flammable substances. This kind of data is the basis for the classification of flammable substances with regard to

  • testing of explosion protected electrical equipment,
  • choice and use of explosion protected electrical equipment,
  • transport of dangerous goods (Hazardous Materials Regulations) and the
  • Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (classification, labelling and packaging, directive  EG 1272/2008).

While the user often has no professional expertise in safety data, the data base Chemsafe makes available up-to-date information evaluated by experts. Chemsafe offers online access since 1989.

The development of Chemsafe was financially supported by the Federal Minister of Research and Technology, the Federal Minister of Economy,  the Hauptverband der Berufsgenossenschaften and the Verband der Chemischen Industrie.

Currently, Chemsafe contains data on about 3000 flammable liquids and gases. The data originates from searches in literature and other data bases as well as from measurements performed in the specialised laboratories of PTB (flammable liquids) and BAM (flammable gases).
