Establishing traceability for liquid density measurements


Density bridges two classical quantities (mass and volume) that are the main driving metrics in economic transactions involving important goods ranging from food to fuel. Currently, only a few European National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) have the appropriate expertise to perform liquid density measurements from the primary level with hydrostatic balances to the secondary level with oscillation-type densimeters, thus national legislation and international requirements can be retained.

The goal of this project is to establish traceability for liquid density measurements at emerging NMIs so that they are able to provide high-level measurement and calibration services and produce density reference materials for national stakeholders, such as the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and petroleum industries. International recognition of these NMIs in this metrological field will indirectly lead to strengthening mutual trust and cooperation at the regional and international levels. This project facilitates compliance with economically relevant EU directives and further strengthen the competitiveness of manufacturing industries.

Renowned in the field of liquid density measurement at the highest level, PTB's Working Group 3.32 undertakes, among other things, the practical and scientific training of other partners in the field of hydrostatic weighing. In addition, it participates in the coordination, the performance of metrological and scientific analysis of comparative measurements with the project partners.
