Collaborations and projects

Temperature dependence of conductivity sensors in ultra-pure and pure water

In cooperation with Endress+Hauser, the temperature dependence of conductivity sensors will be measured traceable to the SI.

State of health of lithium-ion batteries (ongoing)

In cooperation with Volkswagen, a reference measuring facility is being developed to measure the state of health of lithium-ion batteries by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

Acidity of seawater (ongoing)

In cooperation with the Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde, the traceability of optical pH measurements at low salinities is being realized.

Stability of primary pH buffer solutions (ongoing)

In cooperation with Merck-Millipore, studies are being conducted on the stability of primary reference pH buffer solutions.

Insulation resistance of heating elements in airplane cabins (2015 – 2016)

In cooperation with Airbus, a testing procedure was developed within the scope of standardization (prEN 4703) to enable the verification of the isolation resistance of heating elements in a saltwater environment by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

ENV05 Metrology of Ocean Salinity and Acidity - OCEAN ( 2011-2014)

The project was coordinated by this Working Group (3.41).

WP1 - Traceability of Practical Salinity Based on Density Standards:
Development and establishment of a measuring facility to measure practical salinity traced to density at temperatures and pressures which are relevant to oceanography. The WP was coordinated by this Working Group.

WP3 - Primary and Reference Methods for Acidity and Composition of Seawater:
A primary method for determining the pH value of seawater was developed.

ENG09 –WP3: Quality Parameter for Bioethanol (2010-2013)

Within the scope of this project, a primary measurement procedure was developed that enables the measurement of the conductivity of bioethanol traced to the SI. The pH value of bioethanol/water mixtures was measured with a primary pH measurement procedure (Harned cell). The suitability of glass electrode measuring chains for measurement in bioethanol was investigated.

T2J10/ TRACEBIOACTIVITY (2008-2011)

WP3 - Metrological Aspects of Chemical Activity Measurements of Essential Ionic Species:
Development of a procedure and setting up of a measuring facility to measure the activity of ions under flow-through conditions. For this purpose, new ISE miniature flow-through cells were developed and reference materials were characterized to calibrate the measurement system in the clinically relevant measurement range (sodium:135-150 mmol∙L-1, potassium:3.5-4.5 mmol∙L-1, calcium:1.1-1.3 mmol∙L-1 and magnesium:0.7-1.6 mmol∙L-1) as well as of chloride. To calculate the ion activity, the semi-empirical model of K. S. Pitzer was used.

WP4 - Ionic Contamination of Ultra-pure Water:
Development of a procedure and establishment of a measuring facility to measure – under flow-through conditions and traceable to the SI – ultra-pure water that has been spiked specifically with ions in the µmol∙L-1 range.
