Single-charge Circuits

Profile

The main activities are focused on the investigation of normal and superconducting metallic circuits exhibiting a behavior resulting from the quantum nature of the electric charge Q.

The control and measurement of individual quanta of charge (e and 2e) makes it possible to design electronic devices which open ways to the realization of a quantum standard for the electrical current.

The operation of charge-based devices utilizes either the principle of tunneling of single electrons in normal-state circuits, i.e. SET, or the principle of Josephson tunneling of single Cooper pairs (each carrying a charge 2e) in superconducting circuits.
