Success of the 291st PTB Seminar on the Progress of Electrical Measurements

The Electricity Division of the PTB organized the 291st PTB seminar "Recent advances of calibration procedures in the low and high frequency range" on April 29, 2015. The seminar addressed the needs of practitioners in the field of electrical measurements and provided information on the recent advances of the field. As many as 141 people attended the seminar, which testifies to the great value that such seminars offer to the electrical metrology community.

 

Electrical measuring instruments and procedures progress at a fast pace because they have to keep up with the rapid development of electronic devices. As a consequence, calibration procedures have to be constantly adapted and improved. This presents a formidable task to accredited calibration laboratories as well as to technicians, engineers, and scientist who are charged with calibrations in industry and research.

In order to support its customers, the Electricity Division of the PTB organizes a one-day seminar "Recent advances of calibration procedures in the low and high frequency range" on an annual basis. The seminar addresses the development of electrical measurements at dc and low frequencies as well as radio frequency and electric field measuring techniques. The seminar fosters communication and information exchange among accredited calibration laboratories, practitioners from industry and science as well as electrical metrologists from the PTB.

In 2015 the seminar was held on April 29, sandwiched between the meetings of the technical committees "dc current and low frequencies" and "radio frequencies and optics" of the German calibration service (DKD), which took place the day before and after the PTB seminar, respectively. The PTB seminar was attended by 91 practitioners from calibrations laboratories, industry and science and by 50 metrologists from the PTB. The high attendance testifies to the great value of the seminar, which addressed a variety of topics. Examples included power measurements at higher frequencies, the measurement of small electrical currents in the nanoampere range, and the possible interference between wind energy plants and radar systems. These examples illustrate the current development of electrical measuring techniques, namely, the constant expansion of the frequency and value range, in which reliable measurements can be performed, and the measurement of complex systems. PTB dedicates considerable resources to research and development in order to meet the growing metrological demand now and in the future.
