To increase the output voltage of the pulse-driven Josephson voltage standard, 16 arrays, implemented on 8 chips, were connected in series. This configuration leads to the operation of 162,000 Josephson junctions in total, resulting in an output voltage of 2.25 V_RMS (6.36 V_PP).

Within the scope of the European project PlanarCal, PTB has developed a comprehensive uncertainty budget for on-wafer S-parameter measurements of membrane technology devices up to 110 GHz. The budget includes instrumentation errors, connector repeatability and calibration standard uncertainties.

A recently discovered novel solid state material, so called 'topological insulators' (TI), is electrically conductive only at its surface. Thin layers of ferromagnetic TI exhibit quantization of the anomalous Hall resistance without external magnetic field. For the first time, this has now been measured with an uncertainty in the sub-ppm range.

The revised International System of Units, the SI, will rest on seven defining constants. With the 303rd PTB seminar, "Current Advances of Electrical Calibrations at Low and High Frequencies 2017", held on 17 May 2017 at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, PTB continued the series of seminars that have treated current challenges in industrial electrical measurement techniques for many years.

For the Quantum Hall Effect, which is one of the pillars of the "New SI", the material independence of the measured resistance has been under continuous experimental scrutiny. For the first time, this has now been extended to a material where not electrons but composites of magnetic flux quanta and electrons ("composite fermions") carry the current.

The Consultative Committee for Electricity and Magnetism (CCEM) of the Convention of the Meter took preparatory steps for the introduction of the revised SI at its 30th meeting from March 22 to 24, 2017. Care was taken that the change to the revised SI will require only minimum efforts by the users of electrical units.

As part of the developments in antenna measuring techniques, the Department of High Frequency and Electromagnetic Fields has successfully tested the recently developed sensors for air surveillance radars at airports in Hanover and Wunstorf. Im Rahmen einer bilateralen Kooperation zwischen der PTB und einem Industriepartner werden neuartige Normalwiderstände entwickelt. Auch nach der Neudefinition des internationalen Einheitensystems (SI) werden sie benötigt, um die geringe Unsicherheit der Quantennormale weiterzugeben.

Für die Automatisierung von Kalibrierungen, die auf Wechselspannungsverhältnisse zurückgeführt sind, wurde ein 8-dekadiger induktiver Spannungsteiler vom Typ Sullivan F.9200 mit Schrittmotoren versehen. Dieser Umbau ermöglicht automatisierte rechnergesteuerte Kalibrierungen mit kleinsten Unsicherheiten, die vorher nur mit manueller Bedienung der Stufenschalter möglich waren.

New current shunts based on SMD components have been designed and built for use in ac-dc current transfer. The design as a four-terminal coaxial disk resistor allows the realization of arbitrary resistance values with flat frequency response, excellent dc stability, and small temperature coefficient.

Präzisionsspannungsteiler werden zur Messung hoher Wechsel-, Stoß- und Gleichspannungen eingesetzt. Im Falle hoher Gleichspannung liegt der bisher in der PTB zugängliche Bereich bei ± 300 kV. Um für zukünftige Aufgaben vorbereitet zu sein, wurde ein rückführbarer modularer Präzisions-Hochspannungsteiler für den Bereich ± 800 kV aufgebaut.

Um der u. a. durch die Elektromobilität verstärkten Nachfrage aus Industrie und Wissenschaft nach Kalibrierdienstleistungen von Leistungsmessgeräten für DC-Leistung gerecht zu werden, wurde ein entsprechender Leistungsmessplatz aufgebaut, begutachtet und als Zusatzleistung in die Liste der Dienstleistungen aufgenommen.

To reduce the complexity of pulse-driven Josephson circuits, junctions with 5-fold stacking were used for the first time. With this optimization, the number of Josephson junctions was increased to 30,000 per chip (with 2 arrays per chip), enabling an output voltage of greater than 0.5 V_RMS from an individual chip.

A hybrid chip (carrier chip for photodiodes) and a multifunctional carrier were developed, fabricated and successfully tested within the framework of the EMPIR project QuADC for the optical operation of the pulse-driven Josephson voltage standard JAWS with photodiodes working at 4 Kelvin.

Quantum information technology requires broadband amplifiers with extremely low intrinsic noise. A traveling-wave parametric amplifier based on a series array of one-junction SQUIDs was developed at PTB. This device is characterized by a large gain, wide frequency bandwidth and a potentially low noise at the quantum limit.

We demonstrated a novel charge turnstile effect by driving a circuit based on a superconducting single-electron transistor with a high-frequency gate signal. Unique to this 3e-turnstile device is its major transport mechanism by a cotunneling “Cooper pair–electron”, a clear distinction to the known electron pumps.

Die PTB fertigt seit Jahren Strukturen mit nanoskaligen Dimensionen, die für verschiedene Bereiche der Metrologie von großer Bedeutung sind. Um die Fertigungsmöglichkeiten zu erhalten und auszubauen wurde ein neues Elektronenstrahllithographiesystem im Reinraumzentrum der PTB installiert.

For the realization of the unit tesla of the magnetic flux density, PTB uses nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in water samples. Samples with gaseous ³He allow several orders of magnitude longer measurement times, promising lower uncertainty and a significant larger flux density range.

In the frame of a TransMeT funded project, PTB in cooperation with the company Matesy develops a calibration technique for a magneto-optical visualization system for magnetic patterns. Using a Faraday sensor based technique, the project aims at a magnetic field measurement with a spatial resolution of about 10 µm.

For the first time, graphene layers epitaxially produced on SiC substrates yield almost identical resistance values for all crystal. The remaining anisotropy of about 3% is due to the unavoidable terrace steps of the substrate surface. With this value, the lower limit for epitaxial graphene has thus been reached.

Two comparisons of the capacitance realisations were carried out, a EURAMET supplementary comparison and a CCEM key comparison. Comparisons are a key instrument of metrology to test the principal techniques and methods in the field and to demonstrate and maintain equivalence of the realised physical units at the lowest possible level of uncertainty, as stipulated in the CIPM MRA.

PTB's pulse-driven Josephson impedance bridge uses spectrally very pure sine waves generated by pulse-driven Josephson arrays (JAWS). For the first time worldwide, a 10 nF capacitance standard was directly linked to the AC quantum Hall resistance (AC QHR).

For the project "electronic Kelvin" a system for the generation of a quantum-accurate calculable voltage noise has been built using pulse-driven Josephson voltage standards. To optimize and characterize this Quantum Accurate Voltage Noise Source (QVNS) system, two such systems have been set up. These noise sources will be tested against each other by varying several parameters.

The Australian NMI was supported in their construction of a temperature controller with a stability better than 0.1 mK to house transfer standards for capacitance. Such stability is required for building the capacitance scale with a target uncertainty of a few nF/F based on a second-generation Thompson-Lampard cross capacitor.
