Three-day intensive "building acoustics" course with record participation

Due to the complexity of the problems, measuring and calculating require a solid knowledge base. Persons who already have a professional career often do not find the time to acquire the basics of this specific field in which their profession has "led" them. Thus, many engineers sooner or later discover that they have to do with acoustics without ever having learned it properly.

. In these gaps, the seminars of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Akustik (German Acoustical Society) jump in. They pursue the goal of working in persons who have little time in their professional lives, into the fields of acoustics in short but intensive courses. For the course instructors, on the other hand, it is an excellent opportunity to maintain contact with practical experience.

At the initiative of the Forum Braunschweiger Akustiker (Forum of Braunschweig Acousticians), such a seminar with the topic "building acoustics" was held in June at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig for the second time. In only three days, the participants became acquainted with such topics as the physical aspects of sound, psychoacoustic effects, the sound insulation of building elements, the correct way to prognosticate sound protection in buildings, building acoustical metrology, the legal aspects of sound protection as well as the fundamentals of structure-borne sound – a topic that is gladly ignored, because "common sense" is mostly off the mark here. Further topics were the uncertainty in measurement and prognostication and the application of numeric methods for solving sound problems.

The event was conducted by Prof. A. Schmitz (Korschenbroich) and Prof. W. Scholl (PTB); other course instructors were Prof. S. Langer (TU Braunschweig), Dr. V. Wittstock (PTB) and Dipl.-Phys. E. Schröder (München). With 33 participants from industry, consultancy offices, and authorities, the course was already "booked out" long in advance.
