Calibration

Working Group 1.71

Calibration of transducers, measuring chains and measuring instruments for translational and rotational motion quantities (see also calibration and measurement capabilities)

Calibration in any desired direction of motion

The highly accurate measurement and testing capabilities offered by the standard measuring devices are exploited not only for the dissemination of the units, but also for the calibration of measuring means intended for practical use (working instruments) if the requirements for accuracy and reliability are high. The customers are from Germany, Europe as well as from many countries outside Europe.

Simultaneous multi-component calibration

Conventional vibration and shock exciters to be used for testing and calibration are designed as single-component exciters, i.e. for the generation of motions in a single specified direction (linear acceleration exciter) or around a specified axis (angular acceleration exciter). However, single-component testing and calibration often do not adequately reflect the conditions prevailing in practice. As a result of research and development work performed over the last few years, the world's first multi-component acceleration standard measuring device is available in PTB Working group 1.71. This standard measuring device has made it possible to simultaneously generate, and measure with high accuracy, motion quantities in up to three orthogonal directions (X, Y, Z) and around a rotational axis (Z).

The standard measuring device is used for the dynamic calibration of motion quantity transducers (e.g. tri-axial accelerometers) and for investigations into the dynamic behaviour of transducers and mechanical structures when these are excited by multi-component motion.
