676. WE-Heraeus-Seminar

"Novel optical clocks in atoms and nuclei"

14.01.2018

9 - 12 July 2018, Physikzentrum Bad Honnef

Welcome

Dear colleagues, we would like to cordially welcome you to the 676th Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Seminar "Novel optical clocks in atoms and nuclei" which will be held from July 9th, 2018 to July 12th, 2018 at Physikzentrum Bad Honnef near Bonn in Germany. This seminar is generously funded by the Opens external link in new windowWilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation.

The goal of the seminar is to discuss conceptually novel approaches to optical frequency standards and clocks. Despite the remarkable precision already realized in current atomic clock worldwide, there is a wide range of concepts for next-generation devices, rooted in very different physical systems. The aim of the seminar is to provide a comprehensive overview on the current state of discussion and shape a community.

A special candidate for a future optical clock is the low-energy isomeric state in Thorium-229, opening the road towards nuclear clocks. The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Seminar will resume the current state of knowledge on this exciting system and connect the worldwide community in this field. The seminar is jointly organized with the EU-FET-Open consortium of Opens external link in new windownuClock.

Also, we want to identify and discuss new applications of precision frequency and time standards, in particular regarding constraining possible variations of fundamental constants, clock-based geodesy, and gravitational wave detection.

The conference language will be English. Please note that the total number of participants is limited. The organizers invite all interested researchers to apply and to contribute to the poster session. A best-poster award will be presented. Female researchers are particularly encouraged, since the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation seeks to support women in science.

Venue

The seminar will take place at

Physikzentrum Bad Honnef
Hauptstr. 5
53604 Bad Honnef

The Physikzentrum is run by the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e.V. (German Physical Society) and supported by the University of Bonn and the state North Rhine-Westphalia.

The stately mansion housing the Physikzentrum is surrounded by a park at the foot of the Siebengebirge ("the Seven Hills") on the right bank of the Rhine River. In the immediate neighbourhood an extensive net of hiking-paths in Germany's oldest nature preserve invites pleasant short or long walks.

Physikzentrum Bad Honnef can be easily reached both by car and by public transport. To plan your journey, please, follow the link:Opens external link in new windowhttp://www.dpg-physik.de/
