Abstract: The present write-up briefly summarizes the uncertainty components relevant for the determination of dose by the alanine dosimetry system as established by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. Free radicals which are produced in the amino acid alanine by ionizing radiation can be detected via electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). The concentration of free radicals is proportional to the absorbed dose. A description of the method has been given in several previous publications. The present report describes the measurement method (which was slightly simplified with respect to previous publications) and lists additional formulae and details as well as additional components of the uncertainty budget that were not known at the time of writing of earlier publications. A brief description of the modifications to the analysis software is given as well.
