Electro-optic AC-DC transfer
At higher voltages, this procedure is, however, prone to considerable power dissipation. PTB’s new concept is based on a measuring instrument that realizes this AC-DC transfer electro-optically via the Pockels effect. This consists in observing the rotation of the polarization plane of a laser beam while it is passing through a crystal to which the AC voltage to be measured has been applied. To detect the process, the implementation chosen is scalable from low to high voltages, shows almost negligible power dissipation and allows measurements also at high frequencies. lower power dissipation
small frequency dependence
good long-term stability
