The dimensions of a cam shaft must be exactly complied with as already a deviation of a few hundredths of a millimetre puts its quality into question and the pollutant emission, the fuel consumption and the wear increase. But how can a reliable proof of the dimensional accuracy of a cam shaft be furnished? For this purpose, a novel cam standard has been developed at PTB in cooperation with a partner from industry. On the basis of this standard, cam measurements can be traced back with due regard to practice. In cooperation with other industrial partners, the procedures shall, in future, be adapted to the needs of calibration service providers.
