This year, the jury of the Helmholtz Prize in the “Fundamentals” category was won over by the metrological sensation presented by the Frankfurt Working Group led by Reinhard Dorner. The group successfully measured the vanishingly small binding energies between the atoms in helium dimers and trimers. The winners in the “Applications” category are from Cambridge: Nicholas A.W. Bell and Ulrich Keyser have developed a groundbreaking new DNA analysis method by mePTBans of nanopores in which customized, folded DNA molecules play a critical role. The prize awarding ceremony took place at PTB within the scope of an international symposium attended by metrology experts from around the world.
