Quantum computers are expected to solve problems that are beyond the capabilities of even today’s most advanced supercomputers. Around the world, the development of quantum computers is in full swing. The two most promising technology platforms for realizing the quantum bits are trapped ions and superconducting circuits. PTB is placing intense efforts into the trapped ion technology. In 2021, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research approved a 15.8 million euro support grant for MIQRO, a joint project whose members are developing a groundbreaking quantum computer based on high-frequency- controlled ions. PTB is also a founding member of Quantum Valley Lower Saxony (QVLS), a research alliance which aims to develop a quantum computer for Germany by 2025 with the support of the state of Lower Saxony and the Volkswagen Foundation, who together are providing a total of 25 million euros in funding.

At the same time, PTB is also working on the metrology relating to superconducting quantum computers. A number of national and international research projects are focusing in particular on the control and readout electronics of quantum bits and on novel measuring technologies that can be used to detect the power of microwave signals directly in situ in the superconducting devices. The goal here is to develop calibration services for the core components of superconducting quantum computers and offer these services to German and European manufacturers.
