Revision of DIN EN ISO/IEC 17 025

01.04.2016

Since the beginning of 2015, standard DIN EN ISO/ IEC 17 025, “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”, has been undergoing an in-depth revision. A coordinated position concerning this revision was developed within PTB and introduced at the national standardization level in the DIN working committee of “Certification Principles (Principles of Conformity Assessment)” and its “Laboratories” subcommittee. During this process, emphasis was placed on determining requirements for metrological traceability in calibration and testing laboratories, in consideration of the legal task of PTB within the scope of the Units and Time Act.

Even at this point, it is expected that the composition of the standard will change considerably, and that central elements of DIN EN ISO 9001:2015, which has also been revised, will find their way into the new standard. In future, the revised standard will impose new requirements on calibration and testing laboratories and – within the scope of the Metre Convention – on national metrology institutes as well.

On an international level, PTB is represented in the respective ISO/CASCO working group via the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).

Experience gained by PTB in standardization work was incorporated into a workshop given by the Eastern European metrology organization COOMET, among other things. The objective of the workshop was for the COOMET members to develop a unified position on the revision of the above-mentioned standard.
